Snow has arrived in ConistonWhilst we have been off site for around a week, the other contractors have been doing some major work on the cabin, including laying the slate tiles on the roof. Internally the electrians and plumbers have been working on their fix.

Since our return we have been working on the wall insulation and erecting the staircase.

Just as we decided to start work on the outside side porch it started to snow! Depending on the weather and the other contractors we are hoping to be finished in one weeks time.

The Log Cabin build - 6th January 2012

Welcome back and Happy New Year. Work has started again on the Finnish Log Home here in Coniston in the Lake District. We are pleased to say that the external wood windows and doors are now in place. A delivery is expected this weekend so we can insulate the log cabins roof.

The Log Cabin build - 13th January 2012

So It's Friday the 13th unlucky for some but not for us, as all is going well on the log cabin build. There was some rumours going around the village of Coniston, that we had broken the planning permission, by building the cabin 4 foot taller than allowed. After a visit from the planning officer who did a site check he confirmed we had not broken the agreement and the build was as it should be.

The Log Cabin build - 9th December

The storm never materialised and wind is not as bad as it has been. We have been working on the project a whole week now and everything is going to plan despite the English weather which has been against us.

Today we have been installing some support beams on the cabin. Sam our Finnish Engineer is heading back to Finland later today so is going through all the important points with Mel Bajic (Project Manager) and Andy Williams (Carpenter) before his departure.

The Log Cabin build - 10th December

We have been working over the weekend and progress is good. Andy one of our head carpenters on the project has gone back and his partner John has come to take his place. Today with the help of Tony Sanders we have lifted the Glulam laminated beams into position.

Why we use Glulam laminated beams.
The high strength and stiffness of laminated timbers enable glulam beams and arches to span large distances without intermediate columns, allowing more design flexibility than with traditional timber construction.

The Log Cabin build- 7th December 2011

So Day 3 and it didn’t start that well, Andy (The Carpenter’s) van had a flat battery so we had to get the jump leads out in the dark and then the heavens opened bringing along the wind with it, so we were all soaked and cold within the first ten minutes of the working day.

An hour later, we had changed our clothes warmed up and ready for the scaffolding to be lifted, ten minutes later the steel arrived, and would you believe it a 3rd delivery! The site is turning into a bit of a mud slide due to all the heavy rain. It has been a very busy day due to all the log cabin deliveries and everyone is being very supportive and helpful.

So now the Scaffolding is almost up and lads are working on the log cabins floor joists inside, there’s no roof so unfortunately they are still getting wet!

The Log Cabin build- 8th December 2011

We are now on red alert for gales due to arrive around 3 pm today. The scaffolding around the log cabin is almost up now and this is making it easier for the team to work on the build.

The floor joists have been installed and the project is moving along nicely, and we hope to have the first floor joist hangers in place later today. The fitting of the joist hangers is a key part of the build if you want to make sure that your cabin floor stays flat and strong.

5th December 2011

Our sister company who deal with our larger log cabins are starting a new build for Alan and Sharon Piper proprietors of Sun Hotel Coniston in the Lake District. Over the next 6 weeks or so they will be building their dream log cabin in the grounds of the hotel. The cabin will be two storeys high and have four bedrooms. With the foundations in place Finnish Log Cabins aims to have the house water tight before the Christmas holidays.

Alan Piper has spent some years in pursuit of planning permission and was finally granted permission from the Lake District National Park Authority. So now the build can start. You may be wondering why start the build in December? Well that's quite simple this is to avoid too much disruption to the tourist trade in the Lake District.

The engineered timber was delivered on the 30th November in the late afternoon. The unloading and checking process started the following day the 1st December. The timber is carefully coded to make the sorting and positioning to be a as simple as possible.

The carpenters then arrived late in the evening ready to start work at 7.00am the next day.

6th December 2011

The team woke up to a bright sunny December morning, we hear reports that many roads are closed due to bad weather conditions around the country. However we are working away in much better conditions today than yesterday.

With bad weather being forecast we are planning ahead by getting in the supplies we will be needing on this build. The nearest Travis Perkins is around an hour and halfs car journey. So organisation is the key here. However something is bound to be missed of the list!

We are making good progress and need a scaffold lift which is scheduled for tomorrow.

If you wish to discuss any of your log cabin requirements the team back in Essex are on hand to answer any of your questions. Give the a call on 01245 400202
