Building Construction

Foundations

An integral part of any successful installation is the construction of a suitable base. All of our buildings require a flat level foundation that incorporates the veranda as well as the cabin.

There are a number of materials and techniques that can be used to achieve this, the most common being either a full concrete slab or individual block piers. Which option you choose is normally determined by the size and thickness of the cabin you wish to erect and what the building is to be used for. For example, a cabin of 45mm wall thickness used to house a hot tub should be sited on a concrete slab.

In some cases however it is not always viable to build with concrete and an alternative method must be used. Block bases are preferable if you wish to erect your cabin on a sloping site, if access is an issue or if you require a temporary installation.

Block bases are cheaper to construct than a concrete slab although they can be more time consuming. It is imperative that the blocks are positioned correctly so that they align with the cabin bearers. If you require a copy of the bearer layout please contact our office and one will be sent to you.

Specifications

The dimensions of the base should be 100mm (4 inches) larger than the cabin footprint at each side and at the rear to ensure that the cabin is not sat on the edge of the slab or block where it is weak. This also allows for a degree of tolerance. Eg. Lillevilla 70 Cabin Footprint, Width 3.9m x Length 5.4m, Base Size Width 4.1m x Length 5.5m

For cabins up to 34mm thick a concrete depth of 100mm (4 inches) is sufficient, extending up to 150mm (6 inches) for all 45mm models. A 6mm reinforcing mesh that covers the entire area should also be laid through the centre of the slab.

Dense concrete blocks should be laid flat and run in line with the directions of the bearers. They should be laid on a a concrete pad a minimum of 100mm (4 inches) thick.

We recommend that poolhouses are sited on a 450mm (18 inches) wide strip foundation. The depth of the strip will vary depending on site conditions and should be confirmed by a qualified professional.
